PHS Art Students Bring Home Top Awards

The Paris High School VASE (Visual Arts Scholastic Event) Team competed recently against 400 entries in the Regional and Area Competition.  The five Paris High School students in Gail Hogue’s art program competed with seven artworks and they brought home two First Place medals with superior ratings of 4 and five excellent ratings of 3.  This was the first time these students have ever competed in VASE.

Sophomores Mario Mungia and Caitlyn Harrison won gold medal with Superior Ratings of 4 for their pen and ink figure drawings.  Mungia’s work is entitled “No Sense in Sleeping” and Harrison’s is entitled “Imprisoned Mardi Gras.”  Earning excellent ratings of 3 were Mario Mungia for an acrylic canvas painting and Senior Courtney Paul for an acrylic canvas painting as well as an intaglio engraved print.  Senior Jordan Welch earned an excellent rating of 3 for an acrylic panel painting and Junior Amanda Sosa earned an excellent rating of 3 for an acrylic canvas painting.

This is one of 20 regional events held over the state involving over 12,000 student entries. Scores are based on the artworks themselves as well as a written and oral interview.  Only 10% percent advanced to state and those were chosen from among the regional winners.
